Terremoto: The Ground Shakes!

A terremoto, which is the Spanish word for earthquake, is like the Earth giving a big shiver! It happens when the ground suddenly shakes. These shakes can be so small you don't even feel them, or so big they can knock over buildings and make the ground ripple like water. It's the Earth's way of stretching and moving, kind of like you do when you wake up in the morning!

Deep inside the Earth, there are giant puzzle pieces called tectonic plates. These plates are always moving very, very slowly. Sometimes, they get stuck against each other. When they finally break free, it causes a big jolt, and that's a terremoto! It's like when you push two LEGO bricks together really hard, and then they suddenly snap apart.

When a terremoto happens, the ground can shake up and down or side to side. The shaking can last for a few seconds or even a few minutes. Sometimes, after the main shake, there are smaller shakes called aftershocks. It's important to know what to do during a terremoto, like dropping to the ground, covering your head, and holding on!
