Key Facts
What is Tennis?
Imagine a game where you use a special racket, like a big paddle, to hit a fuzzy yellow ball! That's tennis! You can play by yourself against one other person, or with a partner on each side. The goal is to hit the ball over a net so your opponent can't hit it back. If they miss, you get a point! It's a super fun game that people of all ages can play, even if they use a wheelchair.
A Long, Long Time Ago
Tennis has a really old history! It started in France a super long time ago, way back when knights and castles were around. Later on, a new kind of tennis called 'lawn tennis' was invented in England. This is the tennis we know today! It was inspired by other fun outdoor games, like croquet, where you hit balls with a mallet.
Why Tennis is Awesome
Tennis is played by millions of people all over the world, and it's super exciting to watch too! Some of the biggest and most famous tennis games are called the Grand Slam tournaments. These are like the Super Bowl of tennis! They happen on different kinds of courts, like grass, red dirt, or hard surfaces. Tennis is even an Olympic sport, just like swimming or running!
How to Play Tennis
In tennis, players use rackets with strings to hit a hollow rubber ball covered in felt. The ball needs to go over the net and land inside the other player's court. If the ball lands outside the lines or the other player can't hit it back, you score a point. The rules haven't changed much for a very long time, but now there are even cool cameras that help make sure the calls are fair!
