Key Facts
The Pope's Super Colorful Bodyguards!
Imagine guards wearing bright red, blue, and yellow outfits, like a parade! These are the Swiss Guards, and they have a very important job: protecting the Pope! They stand tall and look very official. They've been doing this for hundreds of years, making them one of the oldest guard teams ever. They are like the Pope's personal protectors, always keeping a watchful eye.
A Long, Long Time Ago...
The Swiss Guards started way back in 1506. That's even older than your grandparents' grandparents! They were first hired to protect the Pope in Rome. Over the years, they've seen many changes, but their job has stayed the same. They are like a living piece of history, still wearing some of the same cool outfits they did centuries ago.
More Than Just Pretty Outfits!
Even though they look like they stepped out of a storybook with their fancy uniforms and long poles called halberds, the Swiss Guards are also super skilled. They know how to use modern tools to keep everyone safe. They train in all sorts of ways, like being really fast and knowing how to handle tricky situations. They are ready for anything!
Who Gets to Be a Guard?
Not just anyone can be a Swiss Guard! You have to be a young man from Switzerland who is Catholic. You also need to be a certain height, about as tall as a grown-up basketball player, and be in good shape. They have to be unmarried too! It's a big honor to be chosen for this special job.
