Key Facts

Location in Atmosphere
The second layer of Earth's atmosphere, above the troposphere and below the mesosphere.
Temperature Change
Gets warmer with altitude, unlike the layer below it.
Ozone Layer's Job
Absorbs most of the Sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
Fun Fact
The stratosphere is where many airplanes fly to avoid bumpy weather in the lower atmosphere.

Hello Up There! Meet the Stratosphere!

Imagine you're in an airplane, flying super high. The air you're in is called the troposphere. But guess what? There's another layer of air way, way above that! It's called the stratosphere. It's like a giant, invisible blanket wrapped around our planet, sitting right on top of the regular air we breathe. It's a very important place in the sky, even though we can't see it!

The Sky's Layer Cake!

The stratosphere is like a layer cake made of air. The bottom layer is cooler, and as you go higher up, it gets warmer! This is super weird because usually, the higher you go, the colder it gets. But in the stratosphere, it's the opposite! This happens because of something called the ozone layer, which is like a special shield that catches sunshine.

Our Super Sunscreen Shield!

The stratosphere has a very special helper called the ozone layer. This layer is amazing because it soaks up most of the Sun's yucky ultraviolet (UV) rays. These rays can be harmful to us, like a super strong sunburn. The ozone layer acts like sunscreen for the whole Earth, keeping us safe and healthy. Without it, life on Earth would be very different!

Where the Big Winds Blow!

Even though it's high up, the stratosphere has its own weather! Sometimes, there are super strong winds blowing around, especially near the North and South Poles. These winds can be much faster than the winds we feel down on the ground. They help move air around in this special layer of our atmosphere.
