Key Facts
What's This Funny Game?
Stoolball is a super old game from England that's like a mix of baseball and cricket! It’s a team sport where players hit a ball and try to catch it. It’s called stoolball because a long, long time ago, people used milking stools as the target to hit the ball at. How cool is that? It’s a game of hitting and catching, just like you might play in your backyard, but with a special history!
A Game from Long, Long Ago!
This game started way back in England, maybe even in the 1400s! People think milkmaids invented it. They would use their milking stools as a target, and a milk bowl as a bat to hit a ball. It’s so old that some people think it might be the great-great-grandparent of games like baseball and cricket that we play today. It’s like a time machine game!
Why Stoolball is Super Special
Stoolball is special because it’s one of England’s oldest games, especially in a place called Sussex. It’s so important there that some people call it Sussex’s ‘national’ game! Even though fewer people play it now, there are still leagues and teams, and sometimes schools even teach it. It’s a piece of history you can still play today!
How to Play a Round of Stoolball!
In stoolball, one team tries to hit a ball and score points, while the other team tries to catch the ball or get the hitter out. The hitter stands in front of a target (like a wicket in cricket, but originally a stool!) and tries to hit the ball thrown by the bowler. If they hit it, they run to a safe spot.
If the fielders catch the ball or hit the target with it before the runner gets there, the hitter is out! It’s fast and exciting!
