Key Facts
Where is This Magical Island?
Imagine a big, green island shaped like a triangle, floating in the ocean! That's Stewart Island, or Rakiura, which means 'glowing skies' in the Māori language. It's the third biggest island in New Zealand, and it's snuggled up close to the South Island, just a short boat ride away across a wavy sea called Foveaux Strait.
The island is covered in thick forests, like a giant, green blanket, and has bumpy hills that go up, up, up, almost as high as a super tall skyscraper!
Home to Feathered Friends!
Guess what? Stewart Island is like a super safe playground for birds! Because there aren't many sneaky foxes or cats, lots of birds that can't fly, like penguins, live here happily. They waddle around and build their nests without worrying too much. The island is also covered in trees, which are perfect homes for all sorts of chirping and squawking creatures. It's a real bird paradise!
People and Their Island Life
Only a few hundred people call Stewart Island home, and most of them live together in a cozy little town called Oban. It's like a small village where everyone knows each other. They love living by the sea and enjoy fishing for yummy seafood.
Sometimes, people visit the island in the summer to see the amazing nature and the special birds. Ferries zoom across the water to bring people and supplies to the island.
A Park for Everyone to Enjoy
Most of Stewart Island is a giant national park called Rakiura National Park. This means it's protected, and people work hard to keep it wild and beautiful for the animals and plants. It's a place for adventures, like hiking through the forests and seeing the amazing views.
The government owns almost all of the island, making sure it stays a special natural treasure for everyone to appreciate and explore.
