Skate (fish)

Skates are amazing fish that look a bit like a pancake with wings! They have flat bodies and big, wing-like fins that they use to swim. Instead of swimming up and down like other fish, they flap their fins to glide through the water. They often bury themselves in the sand, looking like they're hiding, with just their eyes peeking out. It's like they're playing hide-and-seek on the ocean floor!

Skates love to hang out in the ocean, especially where the water isn't too deep. You can find them in oceans all around the world, from cold places like the Arctic to warmer spots. They prefer to live on the sandy or muddy bottom of the sea. Imagine a giant playground for fish, and skates are playing on the sandy parts of it!

What do skates eat? They are carnivores, which means they love to eat meat! Their favorite snacks are small fish, crabs, and shrimp. They use their flat bodies to their advantage, sometimes lying in wait on the seafloor before pouncing on their next meal. They also have a special tail with a spine that can be used for defense, like a built-in sword!

When skate moms have babies, they don't have just one or two. They lay eggs in special leathery cases that look like little purses. These cases protect the baby skates until they are ready to hatch. Sometimes, these egg cases wash up on the beach, and people call them 'mermaid's purses'! It's a super cool way for skates to start their lives.
