Key Facts
Meet the Bronze Buddy!
Silent Sam was a statue made of bronze, which is a shiny metal. He looked like a soldier from a long, long time ago, standing tall and proud. He was placed at a big school called the University of North Carolina. People saw him every day as they walked around the school grounds. He was like a silent watcher, always in the same spot.
Where Did He Come From?
A group of people who wanted to remember soldiers from the past helped make Silent Sam. They found a sculptor, which is an artist who makes statues, to create him. The sculptor used a young man as a model to make the statue look real. He was put up in 1913, which is so long ago that your great-great-grandparents might have been alive then!
Why Did People Talk About Him?
For many years, Silent Sam stood there. But some people felt he represented sad and unfair ideas from the past. They thought he shouldn't be in such an important spot at the school. Because of this, people started to protest and ask for him to be moved. It became a big topic of discussion for many years.
A Big Change!
One day in 2018, a group of students decided they had waited long enough. They worked together and pulled Silent Sam down from his spot! It was a very dramatic moment. After he was taken down, the school decided to move him to a safe place. His old spot is now empty, and people still talk about what happened.
