Selman Waksman

Selman Waksman was born a long, long time ago in a country called Russia. Imagine a place with lots of snow and big forests! When he grew up, he moved all the way across the ocean to the United States. He became a super smart scientist who loved to study the tiny living things in the soil, the dirt beneath our feet. He was like a detective for the microscopic world!

This led to finding a special medicine called streptomycin. It was like finding a superhero in a tiny bottle that could help people get better when they were very ill.

Because Selman Waksman was so brilliant and found ways to help so many people, he won a HUGE award called the Nobel Prize! It's like winning the biggest gold medal in the world for science. He won it for discovering streptomycin, which was the first medicine that could really help people with a sickness called tuberculosis. This discovery saved countless lives and made him famous worldwide.

Selman Waksman was so excited about his discoveries that he wanted to help other scientists do amazing work too. He used the money he earned from his inventions to build a special place called the Waksman Institute of Microbiology. It's a big building where scientists still work today, trying to find new ways to fight diseases. It’s like a super-powered science playground!
