Key Facts
Welcome to Sarnath, the Deer Park!
Sarnath is a special town in India, not too far from a bigger city called Varanasi. It's also known as the Deer Park because, a long, long time ago, a king promised to protect all the deer living there. This peaceful place is super important because it's where the Gautama Buddha, a very wise teacher, gave his first big lesson after he understood everything.
It’s like the spot where his amazing ideas first started spreading to everyone!
The Buddha's First Big Talk!
After the Buddha became enlightened, he traveled to Sarnath. He found his first five friends, who were also learning, and he shared his very first teaching with them. This teaching was called the 'First Turning of the Wheel of Dharma.' It happened around 528 BCE, when the Buddha was about 35 years old.
Think of it like the Buddha starting his very own school, and Sarnath was the classroom for his first amazing lesson!
A Place for Deer and Wisdom
The name Sarnath actually means 'Lord of the Deer.' There’s a story that a brave deer offered to be sacrificed instead of a female deer the king wanted to hunt. The king was so impressed that he made the park a safe place for all deer. So, Sarnath is a place that honors both animals and the wise teachings of the Buddha, making it a very special and peaceful spot.
Why Sarnath is Super Important!
Sarnath is one of the most important places for Buddhists all around the world to visit. It's one of the four holiest places, along with where the Buddha was born, where he became enlightened, and where he passed away. Visiting Sarnath is like going to a historical landmark that tells an incredible story about kindness, wisdom, and sharing important ideas with the world.
