Key Facts
Salty Seas on Land!
Salt lakes are special lakes that are not connected to the big ocean. They are like giant puddles of salty water right in the middle of the land! The water in these lakes has way more salt and other minerals than your bathwater or even the ocean. Sometimes, they can be so salty that they look pink!
How Do They Get So Salty?
These lakes get super salty because of something called evaporation. That's when the sun heats up the water, and it turns into vapor and floats up into the sky, like steam from a kettle. But when the water goes up, the salt and minerals get left behind. Over a long, long time, all that salt builds up, making the lake very salty.
A Home for Special Critters
Even though they are super salty, some amazing creatures can live in salt lakes! Tiny little shrimp and special kinds of algae love the salty water. These tiny things are food for birds that fly all over the world. Some salt lakes are so important for these birds that they are protected places.
Why We Need to Be Careful
Salt lakes are really cool, but they can be in trouble. Sometimes, people use too much of the water that flows into the lake, so it doesn't get enough fresh water. Also, pollution can make the water unhealthy. We need to take care of these special salty places so they can stay healthy for the animals and for us to enjoy.
