River monitor

The idea for these boats came from a very old American boat called the USS Monitor. It was used a long, long time ago in a big war! This boat was special because it had a spinning tower for its guns. This spinning tower was super helpful when boats were in narrow rivers, because it could aim its guns in almost any direction.

River monitors were built to float in shallow water, like a bathtub toy. This is because rivers aren't always deep. They had to be able to go places where bigger ships couldn't. Some of these boats were really big, but they were designed so they wouldn't get stuck on the river bottom.
