He was like a superhero for the people, fighting against the rich and powerful nobles. The opera tells his amazing story of how he became a leader and tried to make things fair for everyone.

This exciting story was turned into an opera by a composer named Richard Wagner. He wrote it a long, long time ago, between 1838 and 1840. That's even before your grandparents' grandparents were born! The opera was first shown to people in 1842. It was a huge hit and made Wagner famous. The story itself is set even further back, in the olden days of Rome.

Rienzi was special because he believed everyone should have a say in how things were run, not just the rich nobles.
