Ramzan Kadyrov's political trajectory is inextricably linked to his father, Akhmad Kadyrov. Initially a prominent figure in the Chechen independence movement, serving as the separatist-appointed mufti, Akhmad Kadyrov dramatically shifted allegiance during the Second Chechen War, aligning himself with the Russian federal government under Vladimir Putin. This strategic pivot led to his appointment as President of Chechnya in 2003.

The assassination of Akhmad Kadyrov in May 2004 created a power vacuum that Ramzan, then just 30 years old, was poised to fill.
