Professor Watchlist emerged in 2016, a project spearheaded by the conservative advocacy organization Turning Point USA. Its stated mission is to identify and publicly list university faculty members whom the organization perceives as actively discriminating against conservative students, promoting 'anti-American values,' or disseminating 'leftist propaganda' within their classrooms.

By December of its launch year, the website had already compiled a roster of approximately 200 professors. This initiative represents a deliberate effort by a segment of the conservative movement to scrutinize and, in their view, counter what they see as ideological imbalances within higher education institutions, framing it as a necessary response to perceived academic bias.

The advent of Professor Watchlist immediately triggered significant backlash from prominent academic and journalistic bodies. Education Watch has garnered support from notable political figures in the UK, including Conservative MP Jacob Rees-Mogg and Home Secretary Priti Patel.

However, it has also faced strong condemnation from bodies like the Council for the Defence of the British Universities, which has characterized it as 'populist rightwing propaganda.' These international parallels highlight a global tension surrounding ideological expression and scrutiny within educational spheres.
