Meet the Little Sticker That Travels Far!

Imagine a tiny sticker, smaller than your fingernail, that has a big job! That's a postage stamp. It's like a ticket for your letter or postcard to go on an adventure.

When you put a stamp on an envelope, you're paying for the mail carrier to take it to its new home, maybe to a friend or family member who lives far away. These little stickers can have amazing pictures on them, like animals, famous buildings, or even superheroes!

Where Did These Amazing Stickers Come From?

A long, long time ago, sending a letter was tricky and expensive. People had to pay when they received a letter, and sometimes it cost a lot! Then, in 1840, a smart man named Rowland Hill had a great idea.

He thought it would be much easier if you could buy a special sticker to put on the letter before you sent it. The first ever postage stamp was called the Penny Black. It was black and had a picture of Queen Victoria on it.

It was so popular that other countries started making their own stamps too!

Why Are Stamps So Super Important?

Stamps are like the keys that unlock the mail system. Without them, sending letters and packages would be super confusing and probably cost way more. They make sure that everyone, no matter how far away, can get important news, birthday cards, or even just a friendly hello.

Stamps also help us learn about different places and things because they often have pictures of history, nature, or art on them. They're like mini history books you can hold in your hand!

How Does a Stamp Get Your Letter Moving?

When you stick a stamp on an envelope and put it in a mailbox, it starts a big journey. Mail carriers collect all the letters. Then, special sorting machines or people look at the stamp to make sure it's real and has been paid for.

If it has, the letter gets sent on its way to the right city and then to the right house. The stamp is like a special code that tells the mail system where the letter needs to go and that it's ready for its trip!
