Key Facts
What's Floating in the Ocean?
Imagine tiny, tiny living things, so small you can barely see them, floating all around in the ocean! That's plankton! They are like the ocean's smallest citizens, and they come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Some are plants, called phytoplankton, and some are animals, called zooplankton. They drift with the ocean currents, playing a huge role in the big blue sea.
Plankton's Big Jobs!
Even though they are small, plankton do HUGE jobs! The plant plankton, phytoplankton, are like tiny chefs. They use sunlight to make their own food, just like plants on land. While they do this, they also make oxygen, the air we breathe! So, a lot of the air you breathe might have started with tiny plankton in the ocean. Wow!
Who Eats Who in the Plankton World?
Plankton are a super important food source for many ocean animals. Little fish eat the plant plankton, and then bigger fish eat those little fish. Even giant whales, like the blue whale, eat tiny plankton called krill! It's like a giant food chain, and plankton are at the very bottom, feeding everyone else.
Plankton's Home Sweet Home
Plankton live all over the world's oceans, from the super cold Arctic waters to the warm tropical seas. They can be found near the surface where the sun shines, or deeper down. They are everywhere the ocean goes! Scientists study them to understand how the ocean is doing and how to keep it healthy for all the amazing creatures that live there.
