Planetesimals are like the LEGO bricks of space! They are solid bits of rock and ice floating around young stars. Think of them as small asteroids or big pebbles, but way out in space. They are the very first step in making planets like Earth. Scientists believe they formed about 4.6 billion years ago, which is super, super old!

Where Did They Come From?

Long, long ago, when our Sun was just a baby star, there was a giant cloud of gas and dust. This cloud started spinning and swirling. As it spun, tiny bits of dust bumped into each other and stuck together. These clumps grew bigger and bigger, like a snowball rolling down a hill. Eventually, these growing clumps became planetesimals, ready to start building planets.

Why They're Super Important!

Planetesimals are like the secret ingredient for planets! They are so important because they are what planets are made from. When planetesimals bump into each other, they can stick together and grow into bigger things called protoplanets. These protoplanets then keep growing and cleaning up space dust until they become the planets we know today, like Mars or Jupiter!

Cosmic Snowballs and Rocks

These space builders can be different sizes. Some might be as small as a mountain, while others could be as big as a whole country! They are made of rocky stuff and icy stuff, depending on how far away they are from their star. Closer to the star, they are mostly rock. Further away, they can have lots of ice, like giant frozen snowballs waiting to join a planet.
