Who Was This Explorer Guy?

Pedro de Mendoza was a Spanish explorer, which means he sailed on big ships to discover new places a super long time ago. He was also a soldier, so he was brave and strong. The King of Spain gave him a very important job: to be the first leader, called an 'adelantado', of a place called New Andalusia. This was like being the first principal of a brand new school, but in a faraway land!

Setting Sail for Adventure!

Pedro de Mendoza lived a long, long time ago, around the year 1487. That's even before your grandparents were born! He was born in Spain, a country far across the ocean. He was chosen for a big adventure to sail to a new continent and start a new settlement. This was a very dangerous journey, but Pedro was ready to lead his team and explore the unknown lands.

Starting a City from Scratch!

Pedro de Mendoza's biggest adventure was starting a city called Buenos Aires. He wanted to build a new home for Spanish people in South America. He brought lots of people with him on his ships, like sailors, soldiers, and builders.

They had to work really hard to build houses and make friends with the people who already lived there. It was like building a giant LEGO city, but with real wood and stone!

A Famous First Leader

Pedro de Mendoza is famous because he was the very first 'adelantado' of New Andalusia. This title meant he was in charge of exploring and settling a huge area. He was also the person who officially started the city of Buenos Aires, which is now a super big and important city in Argentina! Even though he didn't stay there forever, his journey helped start something amazing.
