Paddy Mayne

Imagine a super-hero who was real! That was Paddy Mayne. He was a brave soldier from a place called Newtownards. Before he became a soldier, he was amazing at boxing, winning lots of fights! He also loved playing rugby, a game where players run with an oval ball. Paddy was so good, he even played for Ireland and a team called the British Lions. He was a truly special person!

Paddy Mayne didn't just join any army group. He helped start a very special team called the Special Air Service, or SAS for short. Paddy was one of the first members, which means he helped create the team's amazing ways of working.

He was one of the most decorated soldiers in the whole British Army! The King himself thought Paddy deserved even more special awards, but sadly, he never got the very top one. It's like almost winning the biggest prize at the fair!

He was a champion boxer, a great rugby player, and a founding member of the SAS. He showed everyone that you can be good at many different things and be a real hero in lots of ways.
