Key Facts
Meet the Giant Under the Sea!
The Ontong Java Plateau is a super-duper big, flat area deep under the Pacific Ocean. It's like a giant, underwater table! It's located north of islands called the Solomon Islands. Even though it's underwater, it's one of the biggest lava mountains on Earth. It's so big, it's hard to even see the whole thing from space!
A Fiery Birth Long, Long Ago!
This giant plateau wasn't always here. It was made by HUGE volcanoes erupting about 116 million years ago! That's way before dinosaurs were even around! Imagine a time when lava flowed like rivers for millions of years, piling up to make this enormous place. It was one of the biggest lava parties the Earth has ever seen!
A Super-Sized Lava Mountain!
When all the lava cooled down, the Ontong Java Plateau was so big it covered 1% of our whole planet! That's like if one tiny sticker covered a whole playground! It held so much lava, it's like filling up millions of swimming pools. Some parts of it poke up to make islands, like the Ontong Java Atoll, which is one of the biggest rings of coral in the world.
What's So Cool About It?
This giant lava mountain is super important because it shows us how powerful volcanoes can be. It's so massive that scientists think it might have even changed the Earth's climate a little bit when it was made! It's a reminder of the amazing and powerful things happening deep beneath the ocean waves.
