Key Facts
Who Was Oedipus Rex?
Oedipus Rex was a famous king in ancient Greek stories. He was known for being super smart and solving tricky puzzles, like the riddle of the Sphinx! But his life was also filled with a terrible fate.
He was the main character in a very old and sad play called 'Oedipus Rex,' written by a famous Greek writer named Sophocles. This story is about a king who tries his best to do good things, but ends up in a lot of trouble.
A Baby's Scary Start!
When Oedipus was born, a prophecy said he would hurt his parents. So, his parents, the King and Queen of Thebes, decided to leave him on a mountain to be abandoned. But a kind shepherd found him and took him to another king and queen who raised him like their own son.
Oedipus didn't know he was adopted! He grew up strong and brave, but he also heard the same scary prophecy about hurting his parents, so he ran away from his adoptive home to protect them.
Solving Riddles and Ruling a City
On his journey, Oedipus met a scary monster called the Sphinx. The Sphinx asked everyone a riddle: 'What walks on four legs in the morning, two legs at noon, and three legs in the evening?' Oedipus figured it out! The answer is a human.
Because he solved the riddle, the Sphinx let him pass. The people of the city of Thebes were so happy, they made Oedipus their king! He was a good king, but he didn't know the terrible truth about his past.
A Sad Ending to a King's Tale
Later, a terrible sickness came to Thebes. Oedipus wanted to find out why. He learned that he himself had accidentally killed his real father and married his real mother, fulfilling the scary prophecy!
When he found out the truth, he was so horrified that he blinded himself with his own hands. His mother, Jocasta, also died. Itβs a very sad story about how sometimes, even when you try your best, fate can be very powerful.
