Where Did This Giant Airport Come From?

Imagine a big, flat field of squishy marshland. That's where Newark Liberty International Airport started! Back in 1928, the city of Newark decided to build an airport right there.

It was much smaller then, only 68 acres, which is about the size of 13 football fields! During World War II, brave pilots from the Army Air Corps used this airport. After the war, a special group called the Port Authority took over and started making it bigger and better with new buildings and runways.

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles!

Getting to Newark Liberty is like a puzzle with lots of pieces! It's near super-fast highways called the New Jersey Turnpike, where big trucks and cars zoom by. But the coolest way to get there is on a special train called AirTrain Newark!

It zips you right to the airport terminals. You can also catch other trains that connect to cities nearby. It's like a giant transportation hub where planes, trains, and cars all meet up!

So Many People Flying!

Did you know that in one year, almost 44 million people flew through Newark Liberty? That's more people than live in many big cities combined! It's one of the busiest airports in the whole country.

Think of all the amazing places they were going โ€“ to visit family, go on vacation, or explore new countries. This airport is like a giant doorway to the world, helping people travel to Europe, South America, and even Asia!

A Home for United Airlines

One airline, called United Airlines, loves Newark Liberty so much that it's like their main home base! They fly the most planes from here and help most of the people who use the airport. United and another company that delivers packages, FedEx Express, have huge buildings at the airport.

These buildings are so big, they cover as much space as about 35 football fields! That's a lot of room for planes and people.
