Meet the Snowy Giant!

Nevado del Ruiz is a super tall volcano in Colombia, South America. It's so high that its top is covered in sparkly ice and snow, like a giant ice cream cone! It sits right on the border of two places called Caldas and Tolima.

This amazing mountain is the highest point in both of them. It's like the king of the mountains there! The volcano is made of many layers, like a giant cake baked over a very, very long time.

When the Mountain Roars!

Sometimes, Nevado del Ruiz gets a bit grumpy and erupts! When it does, hot gas and rocks shoot out, and the melting snow on top turns into a fast-moving river of mud and rocks called a lahar. Imagine a super-fast mudslide!

In 1985, one of these mudslides was so big it buried a whole town called Armero. It was a very sad day, and it's remembered as the Armero tragedy. This shows us how powerful volcanoes can be.

A Home for Nature

Nevado del Ruiz is part of a special protected area called Los Nevados National Natural Park. This park is like a big, safe home for lots of plants and animals. Besides Nevado del Ruiz, there are other volcanoes in the park too! The park helps keep the mountain and everything around it safe. Scientists watch the volcano very closely to make sure everyone knows if it's getting ready to rumble.

Keeping Watch Over the Giant

Even though Nevado del Ruiz is beautiful, it can also be dangerous. Scientists from the Colombian Geological Survey are always watching it. They have special tools to listen to the mountain and feel if it's shaking. This is called monitoring. They want to make sure people who live nearby are safe. They help warn everyone if the volcano looks like it might erupt and cause a big mudslide.
