Key Facts
Who Gets to Play in the NBA?
The NBA draft is like a special party where basketball teams get to choose amazing new players to join them. Think of it like picking the best players for your playground game, but these players are super tall and can jump really high! Teams have been doing this since 1947, which is a super long time ago, even before your parents were born!
All 30 NBA teams get a chance to pick players, so everyone has a shot at getting a new star.
Picking the Future Stars!
How do teams know who to pick? They watch players in college basketball, and sometimes even players from other countries who are really good. It's like scouting for the best talent!
Players have to be a certain age and ready to play professionally. Sometimes players are so good they skip college and go straight to the pros, but they still have to wait until they are old enough and have finished high school for at least a year.
The Big Day: Draft Day!
The draft usually happens in the summer, when the basketball season is over. It's split into two parts, called rounds. In total, 60 players get picked!
Imagine 60 amazing new players joining the league. Picking the right player is super important for a team. If they pick someone who doesn't play well, it's like getting a toy that breaks right away.
But if they pick a superstar, they could win lots of games!
WOW! Did You Know?
Did you know that for a long time, players could even be picked straight out of high school? But now, players have to be at least 19 years old and have been out of high school for a year. Some players even go play in other countries for that year, like playing in Italy or Australia! It's like taking a gap year to get even better before joining the NBA.
