A Museum Just for Women Artists!

Imagine a whole museum filled with incredible paintings, sculptures, and more, all created by super talented women! That's the National Museum of Women in the Arts. It's the very first museum in the whole world that is only for art made by women.

It's like a special club for amazing female artists, showing off their awesome creations from a long, long time ago all the way up to today. It’s a place where their stories and art get to shine super bright!

From a Big Idea to a Real Place!

This amazing museum started with a big dream from two people, Wallace and Wilhelmina Holladay. They wanted to make sure everyone knew about the fantastic art made by women. So, in 1981, they decided to create this special museum.

It opened its doors in 1987 and has been growing ever since! They’ve collected over 6,000 pieces of art from more than 1,000 different women artists. That’s a lot of art and a lot of artists!

Art That Tells Amazing Stories!

The art inside this museum is like a treasure chest of stories. You can see paintings from the 1500s, which is older than your great-great-great-great-grandparents! You can also see art made by artists like Mary Cassatt, who painted beautiful pictures of mothers and children, and Alma Woodsey Thomas, who used bright, happy colors.

There's even a painting by Frida Kahlo, a very famous artist known for her unique self-portraits. Each artwork has its own special magic.

A Super Cool Building for Super Cool Art!

The museum itself is in a really old and special building that used to be a Masonic Temple. It’s so historic that it’s on a special list of important places in America! This building has seen many things over the years.

Not too long ago, the museum closed for a big makeover, like getting a brand new coat of paint and some exciting upgrades. It reopened in 2023, ready to welcome everyone back to see all the wonderful art inside!
