Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
Key Facts
Where the Beach Meets the Sun!
Imagine a super long beach, 60 miles of sand called the Grand Strand! Myrtle Beach is right in the middle of it. It's on the East Coast of the United States, where the weather is warm and sunny most of the year.
This means lots of days for playing in the sand and splashing in the ocean. The city is part of South Carolina, a state known for its beautiful coastline. It's a perfect spot for a vacation!
From Quiet Woods to Busy Town
Long ago, people called the Waccamaw lived here. Later, a family named Whither settled nearby, and a little stream was named after them. Then, a man named Franklin Burroughs had a big idea to make this place a fun resort.
He built a railroad to the beach, and his family opened the first hotel. His wife named the town Myrtle Beach because of pretty, waxy myrtle plants that grew there. Now, it's a very popular place for families!
Fun for Everyone!
Myrtle Beach is famous for its amazing beaches, but there's so much more! It has tons of golf courses, like a giant outdoor playground for golfers. And guess what?
There are over 1,800 restaurants! That's more restaurants than there are days in five years! All these fun things bring over 20 million visitors every year.
That's like filling up a whole stadium with people, then filling it up again, and again, and again!
Lots of People Love It Here!
Even though it's a popular vacation spot, Myrtle Beach is also a real city where people live. About 35,000 people call it home. But the area around Myrtle Beach is growing super fast, with more and more people moving there to live and work. It's a place that's always buzzing with activity, from the people who live there to the millions of visitors who come to enjoy the sunshine and fun.
