Long ago, people called the Waccamaw lived here. Later, a family named Whither settled nearby, and a little stream was named after them. Then, a man named Franklin Burroughs had a big idea to make this place a fun resort.

He built a railroad to the beach, and his family opened the first hotel. His wife named the town Myrtle Beach because of pretty, waxy myrtle plants that grew there. Now, it's a very popular place for families!

Myrtle Beach is famous for its amazing beaches, but there's so much more! It has tons of golf courses, like a giant outdoor playground for golfers. And guess what?

There are over 1,800 restaurants! That's more restaurants than there are days in five years! All these fun things bring over 20 million visitors every year.

That's like filling up a whole stadium with people, then filling it up again, and again, and again!
