Mount Rogers

Imagine a giant reaching for the sky! That's Mount Rogers, the highest natural spot in all of Virginia. It's so tall, its peak is 5,729 feet above the ocean.

That's like stacking 100 school buses on top of each other! It sits right on the border between two counties, like a friendly giant straddling a line. Most of this mountain is a protected wild place called a wilderness, meaning it's kept super natural for animals and plants to enjoy.

This amazing mountain is named after a very important scientist named William Barton Rogers. He was super smart and loved learning about rocks and the Earth. He taught at big colleges and even helped start a famous science school called MIT!

Because he was the first State Geologist of Virginia, helping to understand the land, they decided to name the highest point after him. It’s like giving a special award to a hero!

Want to visit the top? You can hike there! A famous path called the Appalachian Trail goes nearby.

From a park with beautiful views, you can walk for about 3.5 miles. Then, a smaller trail with blue markers will lead you right to the very top. The summit is covered in trees, but you can find special metal markers on the ground that scientists used to measure how high it is.

Mount Rogers is part of a huge, protected area called the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area.
