Émile Durkheim: The Society Detective!

Imagine a detective who doesn't look for clues about who stole a cookie, but instead looks for clues about how people in a whole town or country live together! That was Émile Durkheim. He was born a long, long time ago in a country called France.

He was so curious about why people act the way they do in groups that he decided to study it like a scientist. He wanted to figure out the rules that make societies work, like how we all follow rules in school or on the playground.

Émile Durkheim was a super-smart teacher. He loved his subject so much that he wanted to share it with everyone! In fact, he started the very first university department for studying societies, like a special club for people who wanted to learn about how we all live together.

He even wrote down the rules for how to study societies, like a recipe book for scientists. This helped make sociology a real science, just like studying stars or dinosaurs!

Sometimes, things change really fast, and people might feel a bit lost, like when a new school opens and everyone is trying to find their way. Émile Durkheim noticed this too! He studied why some groups of people stay strong and happy, even when things are changing. He looked at things like why people follow rules, why we have holidays, and why we feel connected to our friends and family.

He believed that even without old traditions, new ways for people to connect would pop up.

Émile Durkheim’s ideas are still super important! He taught us that we can study how societies work using facts and numbers, kind of like how a scientist uses a microscope. He showed that even something sad like suicide could be understood by looking at the whole society, not just one person.
