Mexican Plateau

The Mexican Plateau is a super big, mostly dry place in Mexico. It's like a giant table that's really, really high up, about as tall as 10 giraffes stacked on top of each other! It stretches from the border with the United States all the way down to a bumpy area in the south.

On its sides are two giant mountain ranges, like the walls of a huge room. This plateau is so big, it covers a lot of Mexico!

Even though it's dry, lots of cool plants and animals call the Mexican Plateau home. You'll find deserts with spiky cactuses and tough shrubs that don't need much water. Sometimes, you can find forests of pine and oak trees on the mountains that stick up from the plateau, like islands in the sky.

These special places are called 'sky islands' and are home to unique creatures that can't live anywhere else.

Did you know a line of mountains splits the plateau into two parts? One part is called the Northern Plateau, and the other is the Central Plateau. But guess what? Scientists now think of them as one giant plateau! It's like having two rooms in a giant house, but it's all one big home. This plateau is a very important part of Mexico's geography.

Even though much of the plateau is dry, people have lived there for a very long time. Especially in the southern part, it's where many of Mexico's biggest cities are, like Mexico City! It's like the heart of the country. People build their homes and cities here because it's a special place with a long history. It's a busy and important part of Mexico.
