Merchant Ship

Imagine a ship so big it can hold more than 1,000 school buses! That's a merchant ship! These are the workhorses of the sea, carrying tons of stuff from one country to another.

They started using steam engines, and then powerful diesel engines that don't need wind! This meant they could carry more and travel faster. Today, these ships are amazing feats of engineering, built to carry huge amounts of cargo safely across vast oceans.

Merchant ships are like the veins of the world's economy. Think about your favorite toy or the snacks you eat. Chances are, they traveled on a merchant ship to get to your store!

These ships bring us things we can't make ourselves and take things we make to other countries. Without them, our lives would be very different, and we wouldn't have access to so many cool things from all over the planet.

Merchant ships are designed to carry specific things. Some are like giant floating refrigerators for food, called reefer ships. Others are built to carry liquids like oil or gas, called tankers.

The most common ones are container ships, which are packed with huge metal boxes called containers. These containers hold all sorts of goods, from electronics to clothes. They are loaded and unloaded by giant cranes at busy ports.
