Meet Matilde: A Curious Kid!
Matilde Hidalgo was born a long, long time ago, in a country called Ecuador. She was a super smart kid who loved to learn. Even when she was young, she noticed that girls and boys weren't treated the same. She dreamed of a world where everyone had a voice, no matter if they were a boy or a girl.
Matilde's Big Dream: Voting Power!
When Matilde grew up, she became a doctor! That was amazing because not many women were doctors back then. But she still saw that women couldn't vote in elections. This meant they couldn't help choose their leaders. Matilde thought this wasn't fair at all and decided to do something about it!
A Clever Plan and a Big Win!
Matilde was very clever. She found out that the law didn't say women couldn't vote, it just didn't say they could. So, she bravely asked to register to vote. At first, some people were surprised, but because the law didn't stop her, she was allowed to vote! She was the first woman in Ecuador, and one of the first in all of Latin America, to cast a vote!
Why Matilde is a Hero!
Matilde Hidalgo showed everyone that women are just as smart and capable as men. By being the first woman to vote, she opened the door for all other women to have their say. Her bravery helped change the rules so that women all over could participate in choosing their leaders and making their communities better.
