Maruko-bune

Maruko-bune were special boats that sailed on Japan's rivers a long, long time ago. They were like the delivery trucks of their day, but on water! These boats were pretty big, sometimes as long as a school bus. They were made of wood and had a cool, pointed shape at the front to help them glide through the water. People used them to move heavy things like rice and wood from one place to another.

Maruko-bune were really important because they could carry SO much! Imagine a boat holding as much as 100 people could carry on their backs – that's a lot! This meant they could move lots of food and supplies to where people needed them. They were also quite fast for their size, thanks to their clever design. This helped make sure everyone had what they needed to live and work.

How did these big boats move so well? They had a special shape that made them slide through the water easily. They were also steered by skilled sailors who knew the rivers like the back of their hand. Sometimes, they even had sails to catch the wind!
