Maldives: Islands in the Sun!

The Maldives is like a super-duper scattered puzzle of islands in a warm, blue ocean called the Indian Ocean. It's far away from big lands like India and Sri Lanka. These islands are so spread out, it’s like having your toys scattered all over the playground!

There are lots of tiny islands, called atolls, that make up the Maldives. They stretch from the very top to the very bottom of a special imaginary line called the equator.

Even though the Maldives has lots of islands, the land itself is super small. It’s the smallest country in all of Asia! If you put all the land together, it’s smaller than a big city park.

But the water around the islands is HUGE! It’s like having a tiny bedroom but a giant backyard. The islands are also very, very flat, almost like pancakes.

The highest spot is only as tall as a small slide on a playground!

People have lived in the Maldives for more than 2,500 years! That’s a really, really long time. Long ago, travelers from places like Arabia visited these islands.

They brought new ideas and traditions. Later, the islands became a place where kings and queens ruled. For a while, they were looked after by a country called Britain, but then they became their own independent country, free to make their own rules!

For many years, the most important job in the Maldives was fishing. Fishermen would catch yummy fish from the ocean. Now, lots of people visit the Maldives because it’s so beautiful! They come to swim, play in the sun, and see the colorful fish. So, fishing and welcoming visitors are the main ways people make a living. The capital city is called Malé, and it’s a busy place where many people live.
