Key Facts
What's More Than Half?
Imagine you have a bag of 10 yummy candies. If you want a majority, you need more than half! Half of 10 is 5, so you need 6 or more candies to have a majority. It's like having the biggest pile of toys when playing with friends. If there are 3 friends and you have 2 toys, you have the majority because 2 is more than half of 3 (which is 1.5). It's all about having the winning number!
Where Did 'Majority' Come From?
People have been using the idea of 'majority' for a super long time, even before there were schools or video games! When groups of people needed to make decisions, like choosing a leader or deciding what game to play, they would count. The side with more than half the votes would win. This way, most people agreed, making it a fair way to decide things for everyone in the group.
Why Majority is Super Important!
Majority is like a superpower for making fair choices. When a group votes, the majority rule means that most people get their way. This helps everyone feel heard and makes sure that decisions represent what the biggest number of people want. It’s used in elections to pick leaders and in classrooms to decide on fun activities. It's a simple but powerful way to get things done together!
Majority vs. Just Being the Biggest
Sometimes, a group might have a 'plurality', which means having more than anyone else, but not necessarily more than half. Imagine 10 kids voting for their favorite ice cream: 4 like chocolate, 3 like vanilla, and 3 like strawberry. Chocolate has a plurality because 4 is more than 3.
But chocolate doesn't have a majority because 4 is not more than half of 10 (which is 5). Majority always means more than half!
