Key Facts
Where the Animals Live!
London Zoo is in a super cool park called Regent's Park, right in the middle of London, England! It's not just a home for animals, but also a place where scientists learn all about them. Imagine a big, green space in a busy city, with canals running through it. This zoo is like a giant, wild playground hidden in the town!
A Zoo's Big Birthday!
This zoo is super old, like your grandparents' grandparents old! It opened its doors way back in 1828. At first, it was just for scientists to study animals. But then, in 1847, they decided everyone could come and see the amazing creatures. It was the very first zoo in the whole world built just for science!
Animal House Firsts!
London Zoo was the first to have lots of special animal houses. They opened the first reptile house in 1849, where you can see slithery snakes and scaly lizards. Then came the first public aquarium in 1853, full of colorful fish swimming in tanks. They even had the first insect house and a special zoo just for kids!
More Than Just Animals!
London Zoo is huge and has thousands of animals! It's managed by a group called the Zoological Society of London. They don't get money from the government, so they rely on people who become 'Friends' of the zoo and visitors like you. This helps them take care of all the animals and keep learning about them.
