Durk Devontay Banks, professionally known as Lil Durk, was born in Chicago, Illinois, on October 19, 1992. He is widely regarded as a pivotal figure in the evolution and popularization of drill music, a subgenre of hip-hop that emerged from Chicago's South Side. Drill is characterized by its stark, often menacing production, aggressive lyrical content, and unflinching narratives drawn from street life.

Lil Durk's early career was deeply intertwined with this burgeoning scene. His initial local traction was built through a series of mixtapes, most notably the 'Signed to the Streets' series (2013–2014). These projects showcased his distinctive flow and authentic storytelling, resonating strongly within his community and laying the groundwork for broader recognition.

This grassroots success caught the attention of major labels, leading to his signing with Def Jam Recordings. His debut studio album, 'Remember My Name' (2015), and its follow-up, 'Lil Durk 2X' (2016), were released under Def Jam, marking his official entry into the mainstream music industry and demonstrating the commercial viability of drill music.

Following his departure from Def Jam in 2018, Lil Durk embarked on a period of independent artistry that proved to be a catalyst for his career's next phase. The release of his mixtape 'Just Cause Y'all Waited' in March 2018 showcased his continued creative output and resilience. This independent success paved the way for a new partnership with Alamo Records in July of the same year.

The year 2020 marked a significant turning point, with his single 'Viral Moment' becoming his first entry on the Billboard Hot 100 as a lead artist. This achievement foreshadowed a major commercial breakthrough. Throughout 2020, Lil Durk released a series of impactful singles, including '3 Headed Goat' (featuring Polo G and Lil Baby), 'Backdoor,' and 'The Voice.' His contributions to high-profile tracks by other artists, such as Drake's 'Laugh Now Cry Later' (which reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100) and Pooh Shiesty's 'Back in Blood,' further cemented his status as a sought-after collaborator.

His sixth album, 'The Voice' (2020), concluded the year by peaking at number two on the Billboard 200, underscoring his growing commercial dominance.

Lil Durk's trajectory continued its upward climb, marked by significant chart achievements and critical recognition. In 2021, his collaborative album with fellow artist Lil Baby, titled 'The Voice of the Heroes,' debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, signifying his first album to reach the top of the prestigious chart. He replicated this success with his seventh studio album, '7220' (2022), which also debuted at number one.

His eighth album, 'Almost Healed' (2023), achieved a peak position of number three. The lead single from 'Almost Healed,' 'All My Life' featuring J. Cole, proved to be a massive critical and commercial success, reaching number two on the Billboard Hot 100.

This track also garnered significant industry accolades, including the Grammy Award for Best Melodic Rap Performance at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards, representing his most substantial commercial success to date and highlighting his artistic growth and ability to connect with a broad audience. He has since been nominated for four Grammy Awards and secured one win.

Lil Durk's influence extends beyond his individual musical achievements. In 2010, he established Only the Family (OTF), a Chicago-based collective and record label. OTF has become a significant entity in the hip-hop landscape, fostering a community of artists and providing a platform for talent, notably including the late rapper King Von, who was a close associate and integral part of the collective.

This venture reflects Lil Durk's commitment to his roots and his desire to build a lasting legacy within the music industry. However, his public life has also been marked by significant legal challenges. In October 2024, he was arrested by federal authorities on charges related to a conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire.

He is also reportedly suspected in another murder-for-hire plot from 2022. These legal entanglements underscore the complex intersection of fame, street culture, and the justice system, adding a layer of controversy to his otherwise celebrated career.
