Who Are the Lagomorphs?

Imagine a group of animals that are related to rabbits and hares. That's the Lagomorpha family! They are known for their long ears, twitchy noses, and powerful back legs that help them hop super fast.

They are all herbivores, which means they love to munch on plants, grass, and leafy greens. They don't have sharp teeth for biting meat; instead, their teeth are special for gnawing on tough plants. They are found all over the world, from snowy places to warm deserts!

Super Snacking and Speedy Escapes!

Lagomorphs have a secret weapon: their teeth! They have four front teeth in their upper jaw, with two big ones and two smaller ones right behind them. This helps them chew through tough plant stems and bark.

When they eat, they often sit up tall to keep an eye out for danger. If a predator, like a fox or a hawk, gets too close, they can hop away at amazing speeds. Some can even outrun a car for a short distance!

They are always busy nibbling and staying alert.

Where Do These Hoppers Live?

Lagomorphs are super adaptable and can live in many different places. You can find them in grassy meadows, bushy forests, and even in dry, sandy deserts. They make their homes in burrows underground, cozy nests made of grass and fur, or sometimes they just find a safe spot under a bush.

From the cold Arctic to warmer parts of Africa and Asia, these animals have found ways to survive and thrive in all sorts of environments. They are true survivors!

Babies and Big Families!

When it's time for new baby lagomorphs to arrive, they are called kits or leverets. Some lagomorphs, like rabbits, have many babies at once, sometimes up to 12! These babies are born blind and helpless, needing lots of care from their mom.

Hares, on the other hand, usually have fewer babies, and they are born with their eyes open and can move around much sooner. It's amazing how quickly these little ones grow and learn to hop and munch on their own.
