Meet the Khasi People!

Imagine a group of people living in a beautiful part of India called Meghalaya. These are the Khasi people! They are one of the biggest groups of people in this area. They speak their own special language and have lived there for a very, very long time. They are like a big family, and their homes are in a place with lots of hills and rain. It's a very green and pretty place to live!

A Family Tree That's Different!

Here's something super cool about the Khasi people: their families are organized in a special way called matrilineal. This means that family names and even property are passed down from the mother to her children, especially the daughters. So, instead of a dad's name being the most important for the family name, it's the mom's!

It's like the girls in the family are the leaders when it comes to family history.

Where Do They Live?

The Khasi people mostly live in a state in India called Meghalaya. This place is famous for getting a LOT of rain, more than almost anywhere else on Earth! Their homes are often in the hills, surrounded by lush green forests. Some Khasi people also live in nearby areas of India and even in a country called Bangladesh, which is right next door. They are a big part of the community in these places.

Why Are They So Special?

The Khasi people are special because they have kept their traditions alive for hundreds of years. They have their own language, their own way of organizing families, and their own stories. Being a matrilineal society is quite rare in the world, making them stand out.

They are also recognized by the Indian government as a 'Scheduled Tribe,' which means they get special help to keep their culture strong.
