Keyboard (computer)

Imagine a flat board with lots of little buttons, called keys. That's a computer keyboard! Each key has a letter, number, or a special symbol on it. When you press a key, it tells the computer what to do. It's like a secret code language between you and your computer! Most keyboards are about as long as a ruler and fit right on your desk.

When you press a key, a tiny switch underneath it closes, like flipping a light switch. This sends a signal to the computer. The computer's brain then figures out which key you pressed and shows the letter or number on the screen. It happens super fast, so it looks like magic! It’s like a secret handshake for your fingers and the computer.

Without a keyboard, it would be really hard to tell your computer what you want! You use it to write stories, send messages to friends, search for fun facts, and play your favorite games. It's one of the main ways we talk to computers, making them useful for school and for fun!

Long ago, before computers, people used typewriters to write letters. These typewriters had keys just like computer keyboards! When computers were invented, people realized they could use a similar board to type information into the computer. So, keyboards grew out of those old typewriters!
