Key Facts
Zoom! It's the Run for the Roses!
Get ready for the Kentucky Derby, a super-duper exciting horse race! It's like the biggest party for horses and people who love them. This race is so special that the winning horse gets covered in a beautiful blanket made of bright red roses. That's why everyone calls it the 'Run for the Roses'! It's a race where only the fastest three-year-old horses get to compete.
Where Did This Amazing Race Start?
Long, long ago, in 1875, some clever people decided to start this amazing race. They wanted to see which young horses were the very best. It's been happening every single year since then, even through big events like wars and when there was a big sickness called COVID-19. This makes it one of the oldest parties that still happens every year in the United States!
Why is Everyone Cheering So Loudly?
The Kentucky Derby is super important because it's the very first race in a special series called the Triple Crown. Think of it like the first level of a video game! If a horse wins all three races in the Triple Crown, it's a HUGE deal.
People call the Derby 'The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports' because it's so fast and thrilling. It's a race that lots and lots of people watch, more than almost any other horse race in America!
How Do These Speedy Horses Race?
These amazing horses are called Thoroughbreds, and they are bred to be super fast! They race on a track that's a little more than a mile long. The boy horses and the boy horses that have been fixed (called geldings) have to carry a bit more weight, like carrying a backpack. The girl horses (fillies) carry a little less. It all happens super fast, in about two minutes!
