This role provided him with direct experience in criminal justice and the challenges faced by individuals navigating the legal system, often with limited resources. His subsequent tenure as a federal public defender further honed his legal acumen and understanding of federal law.

From 2012 to 2017, Patel served within the Department of Justice, a critical period that likely exposed him to the broader scope of federal law enforcement and policy-making. This foundational experience in advocating for clients and understanding the intricacies of the justice system laid the groundwork for his subsequent, more high-profile roles in national security and intelligence.

Patel's career trajectory then shifted towards national security and intelligence policy. He became a senior aide to Devin Nunes, then-chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. In this capacity, he was instrumental in the development of the 'Nunes memo,' a document that alleged abuses of authority by FBI officials during an investigation into links between associates of Donald Trump and Russian officials.

This role placed him at the nexus of significant political and investigative controversies. His involvement in intelligence oversight and policy formulation continued as he joined the National Security Council's International Organizations and Alliances directorate in February 2019. These positions underscore his deep immersion in the complex landscape of U.S. foreign policy and national security strategy.

The year 2020 marked a significant escalation in Patel's responsibilities within the U.S. intelligence community. He was appointed principal deputy director of national intelligence, a position that involves overseeing and coordinating the nation's intelligence agencies. This role is pivotal in ensuring that intelligence is collected, analyzed, and disseminated effectively to inform national security decisions.

Later that year, following a change in leadership at the Department of Defense, Patel was named chief of staff to the acting secretary of defense, Christopher C. Miller. In November 2024, Kash Patel was nominated by President Donald Trump to succeed Christopher A. Wray as the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). After confirmation by the Senate in February 2025, he officially assumed leadership of this paramount law enforcement agency.

This appointment is historically significant as Patel is the first individual of South Asian descent to hold the position of FBI Director. Prior to his FBI tenure, he also served as the acting director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) from February to April 2025.
