Karl-Otto Koch

Imagine a grown-up who was in charge of some very serious places a long, long time ago. That was Karl-Otto Koch! He was a commander, which means he was like a leader, in a group called the SS. He was the very first person to be the boss, or commandant, of two places called Buchenwald and Sachsenhausen. These were concentration camps, and they were very sad places for many people.

Karl-Otto Koch became the first commandant of Buchenwald and Sachsenhausen. Think of it like being the first principal of a brand new school! He was in charge of everything that happened there. He also became the first commandant of another camp called Majdanek. This was a very difficult job, and he was responsible for many things that happened in these places.

When Karl-Otto Koch was the commandant of Majdanek, something very bad happened. He and others took lots of valuable things and money from Jewish people who were forced to be there. It’s like someone taking your favorite toys and not giving them back. This was a very wrong and sad part of his story. His wife, Ilse Koch, was also involved in bad things at Buchenwald.

Karl-Otto Koch lived from 1897 to 1945. Sadly, his life ended in 1945. He was a part of history, but not in a good way. It’s important to learn about people like him so we can understand what happened in the past and make sure sad things like this don't happen again. Learning about history helps us be kinder and more understanding.
