Kalpana Chawla

Imagine a super-smart explorer named Kalpana Chawla! She was the very first woman from India to zoom into outer space. Kalpana loved learning about rockets and flying from a young age. She studied hard in school, just like you do! Then, she traveled all the way to America to learn even more about how to fly to the stars. She was a true pioneer, showing everyone that dreams can reach the sky!

Kalpana's first big adventure was on a giant spaceship called the Space Shuttle Columbia. It was like a flying laboratory! She was a mission specialist, which means she had important jobs to do.

One of her tasks was to use a special robotic arm, like a super-long mechanical hand, to help with experiments in space. She floated around, looking out at our beautiful Earth from way up high. It must have been an amazing view!

Sadly, Kalpana's second trip on the Space Shuttle Columbia ended in a terrible accident when the spaceship came back to Earth. It was a very sad day for everyone. But even though she is no longer with us, her bravery and passion for space travel still shine bright. She is remembered with special awards, and many buildings and even places on other planets are named after her. She's a real hero!

Kalpana Chawla is super cool because she followed her dreams no matter what! She proved that girls and people from any country can become astronauts and explore the universe.
