Who Was This Poem Wizard?

Imagine a time when there were no phones or video games! That was when Kakinomoto no Hitomaro lived, a very special poet in Japan. He was like a rockstar of words, writing poems that people still love today. He lived so long ago, around the time when castles were being built and knights wore armor. Hitomaro was also a nobleman, which meant he was important and worked for the Empress!

His Amazing Word Magic!

Hitomaro was the best at writing a type of poem called 'waka'. These poems are short, like a quick hello, but they can say so much! He wrote about the Emperor and his family, like singing their praises.

But he also wrote beautiful poems about traveling and seeing amazing sights, like mountains and rivers. His poems were so good, they were collected in a big book called the Man'yōshū, which is the oldest poetry book in Japan!

Why We Still Remember Him!

Even though Hitomaro lived over 1,300 years ago, his poems are still super important. He's considered one of the greatest poets ever in Japan! People thought his poems were so magical that they even started to think of him as a god of poetry. He was so good that other famous poets who came later looked up to him and said he was like a shining star in the world of poems.

A Poet's Life Story

We don't know everything about Hitomaro's life, which makes him a bit mysterious! He was born a long, long time ago, probably in the 650s, in a place called Yamato Province. He likely passed away in another place called Iwami Province around the year 709.

He worked for Empress Jitō, writing poems for her. His poems are like little windows into what life was like way back then, showing us what people cared about and what they saw.
