Fun Fact
After a giant earthquake, King Joseph was so scared of buildings that he lived in tents!

King of Sunny Portugal!

Joseph I was a king who lived a long, long time ago in a country called Portugal. Portugal is in Europe, a big continent with lots of countries. It's like a big boot kicking Italy!

Portugal has sunny beaches and beautiful cities. Joseph was born in Lisbon, the capital city, which is like the biggest, busiest playground in Portugal. He became king when he was about 36 years old, which is pretty old for kids, but not for a king!

A King's Big Changes!

Joseph loved to hunt and listen to music, especially operas. But his life got super interesting when a HUGE earthquake shook Lisbon in 1755. It was so big it made him scared of being inside buildings! He decided to live in tents instead, like a giant camping trip! This earthquake also helped his main helper, the Marquis of Pombal, make lots of new rules and fix up the country.

Who Was Joseph?

Joseph I was a king, but he wasn't always going to be one! He was the second son, meaning he had an older brother. But when his older brother sadly passed away, Joseph became the next in line to be king. He got married and had four daughters. He was king for a very long time, from when he was 36 until he was 62 years old. That's like being king for almost your whole childhood and then some!

What Did Joseph Do?

Joseph's main helper, the Marquis of Pombal, was like a super-smart advisor. He helped Joseph make Portugal more modern. They built new things, changed old rules, and made the economy stronger, which is like making sure everyone has enough toys and snacks!

Even though Joseph loved hunting, he let his advisor make big changes. When Joseph died, his oldest daughter became queen, continuing the royal family's story.
