Johnston Atoll

Johnston Atoll is a tiny group of islands far out in the big Pacific Ocean. It's so far away that hardly anyone can visit! It's not a country, but it's managed by the United States Air Force, which is part of the military. Think of it like a special playground that only certain people can go to for important reasons. It's surrounded by beautiful blue water and lots of coral reefs.

Long ago, Johnston Atoll was just two small islands. But over many years, people used big machines to make the islands bigger! They even made two brand new islands. They also built a super long runway, like a giant road for airplanes. It's like building a whole new playground from scratch! The islands are now much larger than they used to be.

Even though people used to do big experiments there, Johnston Atoll is now a safe place for lots of birds! Many kinds of seabirds come here to build their nests and raise their babies. The ocean around the islands is also full of amazing sea creatures. It's like a giant, protected bird sanctuary and aquarium all in one!

Sometimes, things left behind from the past can make the island a little messy. But scientists and helpers have worked hard to clean up the land and water. They also watch out for tiny creatures, like the yellow crazy ants, that were bothering the birds. Now, the island is a much better home for all the animals that live there.
