Who Was President Tyler?

John Tyler was the 10th president of the United States, serving from 1841 to 1845. He wasn't elected president at first, but became president when the president before him, William Henry Harrison, sadly passed away just one month after taking office. This was a brand new situation for the country, and John Tyler stepped up to lead!

A Surprise Job!

John Tyler was elected as the Vice President, which is like the president's second-in-command. But when President Harrison died, John Tyler became the very first Vice President to take over as President. He was so determined to be president that he took the oath of office right away, even though some people weren't sure if he should. This set a new rule for presidents!

What Did He Do?

President Tyler had some big ideas, but he didn't always agree with the people in his own political party. He vetoed (which means he said 'no' to) some of their plans, like creating a new national bank. Because of this, his own party got mad and even gave him a nickname: 'His Accidency'! But he also signed important treaties with other countries, like one with Great Britain to settle a border.

Texas Joins the USA!

One of the most important things President Tyler did was help Texas become a state. He believed it would be good for the country. Just before his time as president was over, he signed the paper that made Texas the 28th state in the United States. He also believed in states having a lot of power.
