Meet the Man Who Loved Bouncing!

Imagine a bumpy tricycle ride making a little boy cry. That’s what happened to John Boyd Dunlop’s son! John, who was a kind doctor for animals, wanted to help.

He thought about how to make the ride smoother. He was good at working with rubber, making things like animal shoes. So, he decided to try something new for his son's tricycle.

He wrapped the wheels in rubber and filled them with air. This made the ride so much softer and happier!

The Super-Bouncy Wheel Invention!

John Boyd Dunlop was born a long, long time ago, in 1840. He lived in Scotland and then in Ireland. He was a doctor for animals, which is a very important job!

But his most famous invention wasn't for animals, it was for his son's toy. He took rubber, which is stretchy and bouncy, and made a tube. Then, he filled that tube with air, like a balloon.

He put this air-filled rubber tube around the wheels of his son's tricycle. It was like giving the tricycle soft, bouncy shoes!

Why Bouncy Wheels Are Awesome!

Before John Boyd Dunlop’s invention, riding a bike or tricycle was very bumpy. The wheels were hard, and every little stone or bump in the road made you jiggle and bounce! His invention, called the pneumatic tyre, meant that the air inside the rubber tube would soak up all the bumps.

This made riding much more comfortable and even faster for racing cyclists. It was a huge change that made travelling on wheels so much better for everyone.

From a Toy to the Whole World!

John Boyd Dunlop’s idea was so good that other people wanted it too! He started a company to make these special bouncy tyres for everyone. Even though he later sold his part of the company, his name, Dunlop, became famous for these amazing tyres.

Today, almost every car, bicycle, and even some airplanes use tyres that work in a similar way to his first invention. It all started with a dad wanting to make his son’s ride less bumpy!
