Jean-Baptiste Colbert

Jean-Baptiste Colbert was like a super-helper for King Louis XIV of France, a very powerful king! He was born a long, long time ago, in 1619. His job was to make sure the king had lots of money and that France was a great place to live and trade. He was so good at his job that people called him 'the Great Colbert'!

Colbert wanted France to be the best! He helped build new roads and canals, like giant water highways, so goods could travel easily. He also started making fancy things in France, like beautiful glass mirrors and colorful tapestries, so France didn't have to buy them from other countries. This helped French workers have jobs and made France more famous!

Colbert also thought about trading with faraway lands. He wanted French ships to bring back exciting things like coffee, cotton, and spices. He helped start a big company called the French East India Company to make sure these treasures arrived safely. He wanted France to sell more than it bought, like having more coins in your piggy bank than you spend!

Colbert was so clever that he created rules for different jobs, like making sure bakers made good bread and tailors made good clothes. He even helped start a special science club called the Academy of Sciences, where smart people could share ideas and discover new things. His ideas helped France become a very important country!
